Ignacio Berroa

Ignacio Berroa

Ignacio Berroa is one of the most influential drummers in contemporary jazz, and a key figure in the fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythms with jazz. Born in Havana, Cuba, in 1953, Berroa began his musical education as a classical violinist before switching to classical percussion at the National School of Art and the National Conservatory of Havana.

Born into a family of musicians, he grew up immersed in Cuba’s rich musical environment, interacting from a young age with many of its greatest figures––an influence that helped shape his distinctive drumming style. As a professional, he quickly rose to prominence in Cuba’s music scene in the 1970s.

In 1980, he fled Cuba during the Mariel Boatlift. Arriving in the United States with no resources or contacts, his extraordinary talent and unbreakable determination soon opened doors beyond anything he could have imagined.

Just months after his arrival, he had the opportunity to play with the legendary Dizzy Gillespie. The jazz icon soon invited Berroa to join his quartet, and from that point on, Ignacio became the drummer for all of Gillespie’s most important ensembles during the last decade of the latter’s life.

Gillespie once described Berroa as “the only Latin  drummer who intimately knows both jazz and Afro-Cuban music.”

Over the years, Ignacio has played with major North and Latin American jazz figures such as McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Charlie Haden, Tito Puente, and Gonzalo Rubalcaba, among others. His debut album as a band leader, Codes (2006), earned a Grammy nomination, a Danish Music Award for Best Jazz Album, and the unanimous respect of the international jazz press.

In addition to his performing career, Berroa is an acclaimed educator. He is the creator of the instructional video Mastering the Art of Afro-Cuban Drumming (1995), and the author of Groovin’ in Clave (1999) and A New Way of Groovin’ (2002)—both considered essential texts on learning the fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythms with other music genres. He has released three albums as a bandleader: Codes (2006), Heritage and Passion (2014), and Straight Ahead from Havana (2017), and remains active as a performer and educator in the U.S. and abroad.

He is currently preparing the release of his memoir, The Path I Chose—a deeply human story chronicling his personal and musical journey, and a moving testimony to the power of perseverance and the transformative force of music.
